MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Sure, is looking for wins. What coach isn’t? But there is more to it than that as his Central Michigan wrestling team goes to Northern Illinois Thursday (8 p.m.) for its Mid-American Conference-opening dual meet. “It’s the start of the MAC season and we want to get off to a good start,” said Borrelli, who is in his 25th season as CMU’s coach. “We just want our guys to wrestle hard, be aggressive, and go out and score points.

“I think that’s one thing we’re working on, trying to gain confidence in ourselves. I think we’re better than we think we are and somehow we have to start developing a little attitude, a little swagger. That’s something we’re really working on.” The Chippewas are 2-0 in duals, winning both of their outings – 18-15 over Rider and 18-16 over Purdue – in the season-opening Eastern Michigan Duals. One of those losses came to Purdue, 30-9, at the EMU Duals. The Chippewas, who are ranked 21st by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, last competed more than two weeks ago at the Michigan State Open. Four CMU wrestlers came away with first-place finishes in that event, and 18 placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes. In seven of the 10 weight classes at Michigan State, CMU had two placers.

“We still feel like we have some good competition in our lineup as far as guys still fighting for starting spots and we’re going to sort that out as the month goes on,” Borrelli said. “We have two dual meets this weekend then we go to two tournaments. We’re still trying to sort some things out, but that’s a good thing.” The Chippewas welcome Michigan State on Sunday (2 p.m.) for a non-league dual at McGuirk Arena.

In the end, Grant will have his place in NIU history as the second most winningest coach in wrestling and has currently sent 31 wrestlers to 38 NCAA appearances. After wrestling at Northern Iowa, being the assistant coach at Minnesota for 10 years and being the head coach with the Huskies, Grant just wants some relaxation. The Official Athletic Site of Central Michigan University - CMU defeated Saginaw Valley, 7-4, on Tuesday in a non-league game at Theunissen Stadium to snap a five-game losing streak. The nine-team field will compete in a 54-hole, three-day tournament with par set at 72 on a 6,073-yard track. The first tee time each day scheduled for 6:40 a.m., with NIU in the first five groups, which tee off in 10-minute intervals. 'It's the most difficult course we play on our schedule,' Tyska said. 'We're going to take each shot one at a time.

It is CMU’s first home event of the season, and members of the 1985-86 squad, which won the first MAC wrestling championship in school history, will be honored prior to the meet. Five CMU wrestlers are ranked in their respective weight classes by Amateur Wrestling News. They are, 20th at 141 pounds;, 10th at 149;, 10th at 157;, ninth at 174; and, 18th at 184. The poll comprises 20 wrestlers in each of the 10 weight classes. Horan and Smith are both ranked second in the MAC, while Ottinger, (125) and (133) are each ranked third. Severn, Heffernan and (165) are each ranked fourth. Horan, a senior and the defending MAC champion at 141, is 5-2 on the season with one of those losses coming on a 5-3 decision to NIU freshman Steve Bleise in the championship match at the Michigan State Open.

Bleise is 11-2 and ranked 16th nationally. Shawn Scott, a junior who is 9-3 on the year, is NIU’s only other nationally ranked wrestler. He is 18th at 197.

By NIU Athletics YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Northern Illinois University wrestling program had one of its best days in a long time on Sunday at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships, with Austin Eicher winning an individual MAC title at 133 pounds and three other Huskies securing automatic berths to the NCAA Championships in two weeks at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Posting an 8-1 combined record with five wrestlers competing on Sunday, the Huskies launched up the team standings to finish this year’s MAC Championships in sixth place with 65 team points, the most by NIU since scoring 73 points in 2004.

The Missouri Tigers were crowned MAC team champions for the fourth consecutive season after posting 127.5 points. Eicher (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) earned his MAC championship — the first by an NIU wrestler since Brad Dieckhaus in 2011 — by taking down Corey Keener from Central Michigan in sudden victory to win by 3-1 decision.

The redshirt freshman, who originally entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed among nine wrestlers in the MAC at 133, scored with riding time to force overtime against Keener, the No. Joining Eicher in New York City when the NCAA Championships start on March 17 will be a trio of other Huskies: Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) at 141 pounds, Andrew Morse (Alto, Mich./Lowell) at 157 and Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) at 197. All three won their consolation brackets on Sunday to take third place in the conference in their respective weight classes. NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig praised the competitive spirit all of the five Huskies wrestling on Sunday showed after they fought until the very end in each match, proven by NIU’s 4-0 record in sudden victory matches. “First off, I’m super proud of Austin Eicher for bringing home the MAC title.

Obviously that is every wrestler’s goal coming into these tournaments, and he was able to achieve it,” Ludwig said. “I’m also extremely proud of the efforts of our three other NCAA qualifiers, Steve, Andrew and Shawn, who each showed great desire today by executing in matches, as well as Trace Engelkes, who finished with a win to claim fifth and boost his chances of getting an at-large bid.” This year marks the first time since 2007 that the NIU wrestling program will send at least four Huskies to nationals. At-large bids to NCAAs will also be announced in a few days, giving hope to other NIU wrestlers, specifically MAC fifth-place winner at 174 pounds Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago), of advancing to the big show.
